What is Detrimental Materials Testing?

Detrimental materials testing identifies and quantifies chemical elements and compounds in manufacturing process materials — including solvents, lubricants, wipes, gloves, tapes, and packaging — that could contaminate, corrode, or otherwise compromise hardware during manufacturing, assembly, shipment, or storage.

Under MIL-STD-2041, manufacturers must demonstrate that every shop product contacting special-purpose hardware is free from detrimental substances above defined thresholds. Laboratory Testing (LTI) delivers full-element breakdowns reported in parts per million (ppm), with certificates of conformance available upon request.

LTI serves defense, naval, aerospace, and precision manufacturing customers requiring rigorous material qualification for high-consequence applications.

Capabilities

LTI performs comprehensive detrimental materials analysis on the full range of shop consumables and process chemicals encountered in defense and precision manufacturing environments.

  • Bomb ICP analysis for low melting-point metal suites
  • ICP-OES for bromine, iodine, and trace element quantification
  • Wet chemistry for chloride and fluoride determination
  • Ion chromatography (IC) for water-soluble halides
  • Water-leach extraction from solid materials (wipes, foam, tape, gloves)
  • Parr bomb and bromine oxidation for total halide/sulfur content
  • Acid digestion for metals in complex matrices
  • Direct liquid analysis for solvents and process fluids
  • Full 21-element/analyte group reporting per MIL-STD-2041
  • Results reported in ppm with applicable limit comparisons
  • Certificate of Conformance (CoC) issuance upon request
  • Customer-specific element lists and reporting formats accommodated
  • Batch, lot, and MSDS/SDS traceability documentation
  • Rush turnaround available

Typical Applications

Defense and manufacturing suppliers rely on detrimental material testing to qualify shop products and consumables used in contact with critical hardware across a wide range of industries and programs.
