Qualitative and Quantitative Chemical Testing

Microscopic examination of metals

Laboratory Testing Inc. (LTI) is an industry leader in quantitative lab testing and chemical analysis. Our qualitative chemical analysis determines the chemical composition of a sample, and our quantitative test lab results determine the concentration, amount, or percentage of one or more elements in a sample. To understand how we do it, read on.

Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Constituent Identification

Qualitative chemistry or qualitative chemical analysis deals with the determination of the chemical composition of a sample. Although this method reveals a substance’s components, it does not provide numerical or quantitative information.

Various qualitative test methods are available at LTI to identify individual elements or groupings of elements present in a sample, detect impurities or contaminants, and even identify the sample material. Our specialty is quantitative analysis of metals and their alloys.

LTI Qualitative and Quantitative Chemical Testing

Our Chemistry Lab offers the determination of moisture content in organic and inorganic materials with the ability to provide qualitative and quantitative results. The process is performable on various sample types and materials, including powders and flat strips, welding fluxes, ores, ferroalloys, and chemical samples.

LTI offers a variety of chemistry methods for composition analysis, material identification, and impurity detection, including the following:

  • ICP Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES)
  • ICP Mass Spectrometry Analysis (ICP-MS)
  • Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS)
  • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR)
  • Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy/Positive Material Identification (PMI)
  • Combustion Method for Carbon/Sulfur Analysis
  • Inert Gas Fusion for Nitrogen/Oxygen/Hydrogen Determination
  • Classical Wet Chemistry
  • Positive Material Identification (PMI) Testing
  • Gravimetric and Volumetric Wet Chemistry Analyses

Quantitative Lab Testing – Trace and Elemental Analysis

Quantitative Chemical Analysis or quantitative chemistry is performed at LTI to accurately determine a test sample’s concentration, amount, or percentage of one or more elements. Trace metal analysis uses the TLI’s highly sensitive instrumentation. Quantitative analysis, in conjunction with a technique for qualitative analysis, provides information on the type and amount of each element present in a sample for complete element analysis.

Keep Your Material Testing Approvals On-Schedule

Test results generated by quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis can provide valuable input for many business decisions; for example, the selection or verification of materials. Analysis can determine if a material conforms to a standard or specification and help uncover the root cause of a material failure. LTI’s single-stop facility can improve quantitative lab testing by reducing the turnaround time for material approvals.
