Thermal Exposure Testing

Extreme temperature testing for thermal shock, high heat, and subzero exposure, performed standalone or combined with other environmental tests.

What is Thermal Exposure Testing?

Thermal exposure testing evaluates how materials, coatings, and assemblies perform when subjected to extreme temperatures and temperature cycling. This type of testing is commonly used to identify cracking, delamination, loss of adhesion, deformation, and other failures caused by thermal stress.

Laboratory Testing (LTI) performs thermal exposure testing using controlled ovens and subzero freezers to support thermal shock, high-temperature exposure, and low-temperature exposure requirements. Thermal exposure can be performed as a standalone test or combined with other environmental exposures to better simulate real-world service conditions.

Capabilities

Laboratory Testing (LTI) performs thermal exposure testing to evaluate durability and performance under controlled high-temperature, low-temperature, and thermal shock conditions.

  • Thermal shock cycling (rapid temperature transitions)
  • High-temperature oven exposure
  • Subzero freezer exposure
  • Standalone thermal exposure or combined environmental testing programs
  • Specimen preparation and handling per customer or specification requirements
  • Evaluation of coated, plated, painted, and assembled components

Typical Applications

Thermal exposure testing is commonly used to evaluate temperature-driven stress and durability across a wide range of products and industries.

  • Coatings, paints, and protective finishes
  • Plated components and treated surfaces
  • Electronics housings and component assemblies
  • Automotive parts, hardware, and fasteners
  • Industrial components exposed to fluctuating temperatures

Test Parameters

  • Temperature setpoints, dwell times, and cycle counts defined by customer or specification requirements
  • Rapid transitions between low and high temperatures for thermal shock protocols
  • Programmed exposure cycles to simulate service environments
  • Testing can be performed before, after, or in sequence with other environmental exposures

Thermal Exposure Methods

Common Thermal Exposure Methods

  • Thermal shock testing
  • High-temperature bake exposure
  • Low-temperature (subzero) exposure
  • Temperature cycling programs

Thermal exposure testing programs can be configured to meet customer requirements and may be performed as a standalone test or combined with additional environmental exposures when required.

  • “Really appreciate your on-time turn-around of data”

I just wanted to take a moment here to thank you and LTI team for making it a great year for us. I have been recently getting great feedback on the data that I compiled for our project. And needless to say – the only reason I was able to accomplish this was for your timely testing of all the 100s of coupons I had this year. It all so beautifully played out. Really appreciate your on-time turn-around of data, even though I sometimes make it hard for y’all, haha! And also your very prompt responses to my every question. It has been great working with you all this past year and looking forward to the new year. Thank you once again! Heads-up – we have a ton of samples that will be coming your way in the new year!
