RoHS Compliance Testing

Characterizations from a chemical analysis lab offer manufacturers deeper material insight.

Seeing the adverse effects of common metals on the environment, the EU moved to ban the most harmful metals and chemicals in the early 2000s. The resulting RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive was an industry-shaping move that guides manufacturing today. RoHS compliance testing is essential to any electronic assembly, from the component and board to the enclosure and cabling.

RoHS Compliance Testing

Most manufacturers, retailers, and distributors that provide electrical or electronic equipment to the European market must comply with RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC. Although RoHS is an EU law, it has seen significant adoption, recognition, or similar legislation in other countries, rendering it an unofficial standard. RoHS has set maximum concentration values for each of these restricted substances. Maximum permissible levels are at 0.1%, except for cadmium, with a limit of 0.01%.

Our RoHS testing lab uses spectroscopy and wet chemistry methods to determine the concentrations of restricted RoHS substances in test samples. We include all RoHS testing results in Certified Test Reports for our customers’ records.

LTI can RoHS test for lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium. Our chemists can also determine if total bromine is less than the highest limit for the most bromine-rich compound, thereby determining that the material meets RoHS requirements.

RoHS 2 Update

The follow-up directive RoHS 2 (officially titled Directive 2011/65/EU) that began in July 2011 exempts several materials and products from the requirements outlined in the Directive and includes additional restrictions as of December 31, 2011. More information is available at the National Measurement and Regulation Office website.
